In loving memory of Ruth M. Heathcote. Daughter of Rasmus and Marie Slining. Passed away of natural causes on April 13th, 2008.
. At 45 years of age, Ruth's mother was told she had a tumor. The doctors quickly changed their diagnosis when at last they realized a beautiful baby was on the way. Ruth was born October 29, 1920 in EauClaire, Wisconsin.
Growing up in Wisconsin farm country, Ruth earned two cents per pound at her first job picking green beans. After graduating from Teacher's College in 1943, she taught in Wisconsin and Michigan for five years. Her move to Seattle in 1948 began her 26-year career of teaching at Whittier Elementary in Ballard. That same year, she met a strapping young man and fell deeply in love. John Heathcote gave Ruth his name on July 1, 1950. Their 60-year love affair will continue throughout eternity.
Ruth's range of interests kept her busy and engaged in life. An active member of the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church, she also loved Husky football, the symphony, traveling and the company of kids and adults of all ages. And we all know Ruth's greatest passion: her undeniable love and complete devotion to animals and their well-being.
Ruth's love for animals began as a small child. She spoke many times of her first pet, a collie, who awakened her each morning by pulling the covers from her bed to begin a day of play. In later years, her Blue Ridge home became a sanctuary for any wild, feral or abandoned animal that passed through. Each one received a meal and a warm bed.
Abused and abandoned cats enjoyed new lives thanks to Ruth's unending patience. She spent months building trust through her pure love and gentle ways. When the right time arrived, she placed them into perfect homes. And if the right time never came, these cherished cats lived out their lives with Ruth. And what a grand life it was.
Ruth, you are greatly missed and will live forever in our hearts. Your loving husband Jack, family and countless friends.
